Annual REF 5K Run/Walk to Take Place in Boston

Staff  |  Issue: September 2007  |  September 1, 2007

The REF 5K Run/Walk is the ACR REF’s premier event to raise funds to ensure the future of rheumatology. Since 2001, more than 1,700 walkers and supporters have gathered at the ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting and have raised more than $300,000 to help fund the REF’s awards and grants program. But it’s more than just an event; it celebrates the amazing progress we’re making together to fund rheumatology fellowship training and encourage highly trained people to enter the specialty.

The run/walk will take place along Boston’s beautiful waterfront. Get your entire division involved or bring your family for a morning of exercise, camaraderie, and – most importantly – a chance to help ensure rheumatology’s future. You can register online at www.rheumatology.org/REF through September 28.

Your chance to receive a free flight for recruiting new ARHP members is almost over. The ARHP member who sponsors the most new members in 2007 will receive a $500 airline flight certificate. Go to www.rheumatology.org for an application to give to colleagues, and make sure they list you as the sponsor. The deadline is October 31, 2007, and the winner will be announced at the networking forum during the 2007 Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston.

Reveille Appointed to SSA Board of Directors

ACR member John D. Reveille, MD, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Spondylitis Association of America (SSA). Dr. Reveille is currently professor of medicine and director of the division of rheumatology and clinical immunogenetics at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He is also the principal investigator for the TASC Genetic Study (Triple “A” Spondylitis Consortium), which involves an international team of researchers in the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. On SAA’s governing board, Dr. Reveille will assume a more active role in guiding the organization through a period of rapid expansion.
