Tremendous progress is being made in the area of fibromyalgia,” says Dan Clauw, MD, professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and moderator of the March 14 audioconference on the current management of fibromyalgia. “However,” he continues, “as in many fields of medicine, those who are not directly involved in fibromyalgia research and treatment are not aware of the progress that has been made.”

Consumers Add Perspective to Arthritis Research

It has been my distinct pleasure to work with consumer collaborators—people living with arthritis—on research projects, advisory boards, and review panels, in consensus meetings to establish research agendas, and as co-educators in health professional programs. Those I work with have chosen the term “consumer collaborator” to reflect their contribution to and eventual use of our partnerships, although others might call them patients or clients.
