Shape the Future of ARHP

Volunteering can increase perceived self-efficacy, self-esteem, and positive affect, which all can result in enhanced psychological health. Volunteering leads to the opportunity for social interaction or networking many times with individuals with whom you normally would not interact. A 2009 article found that 20% of the volunteers in their study stated that their health had improved since volunteering and that nearly 30% stated that their lives in general were improved in relation to their volunteering. The association between volunteering and greater health and happiness is a definite plus to volunteering in a professional organization such as the ARHP.

What an exciting year 2010 has been for the ARHP! We have made amazing progress in education, collaboration, and charting the ARHP’s future. To help you understand what the ARHP leadership and staff are doing on your behalf, I would like to share a few of our accomplishments from the past year.

Networking Opportunities at Annual Meeting

As the 2010 ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting continues to draw an increasing number of rheumatology physicians and health professionals, it has become vital to create forums that encourage a sense of community and bring value to the networking aspects of the meeting. The ACR and ARHP Annual Meeting Planning Committees continue to strive to provide more venues for meet-and-greets and improved opportunities for both professional and casual interaction among attendees.

ARHP Member Serving in Afghanistan

Epidemiologist and ARHP member Lieutenant Colonel Robert Campbell, PhD, is currently serving as a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve on a biometric team that assists senior officials of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, USAID, the U.S. Embassy, and other military organizations in the development of plan for the recruitment of biometric enrollment technicians and the identification of a secure national database to support a revised Afghan National Identification card, the “New Tazkira.”
