The ACR Seeks to Expand Engagement, Influence Among State Legislators

Staff  |  Issue: November 2014  |  November 1, 2014

ACR Affiliate Society Council Member Dr. Kelly Weselman with Rep. John Barrow (GA-12) in Atlanta.

Our membership has been enormously successful lobbying on Capitol Hill and advocating for increased access to care, treatments and much more. We saw bipartisan support for our PATA bill and collected new co-sponsors on other important legislation. Advocating in Washington is the centerpiece of our political effort, but as they say—all politics are local!

The ACR is implementing a new approach to engage members of Congress, not only in Washington, but also back in their home districts. This is where our strength as a membership society can flourish: We have real physicians and patients who are voters. That means your voice is truly powerful in your district. We need your help in identifying members of Congress in your state to support. Also, make yourself available for visits and meetings with elected officials, engage local ACR members, raise funds for RheumPAC and generally be active participants in our advocacy efforts.

With the election results in this month, now is a critical time to lay the foundation for our involvement with the 114th Congress and the new campaign cycle. If you are interested in becoming a key contact in your state for federal policy issues, contact Starla Tanner in the ACR Advocacy Department at [email protected] or 404-633-3777.
