ACR Volunteers Attend Leadership Development Conference

Last month, volunteers from the ACR, ARHP, and REF met in Atlanta for the Annual Leadership Development Conference. This year’s conference focused on media relations and social media in a healthcare environment. The goal of this year’s conference was to educate the volunteers on how to successfully use the different types of media outreach. The topics were timely, what with the launch of the ACR’s first public relations campaign, Simple Tasks, and a successful social media session held at the 2011 ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting.

Setting Goals for Future Growth

Perhaps the most personally rewarding aspect of working with the ACR Research and Education Foundation (REF) is seeing the success that can come from setting lofty goals. First and foremost, the REF is a goal-oriented organization. The staff and volunteers are not only committed to the goal of ensuring the future of rheumatology, but they aspire to reach high and to lead in this effort.

Honorary Member Joan “Happy” Tyree Retiring

Staff member Joan “Happy” Tyree has worked in arthritis since May 1982, when she joined the staff of the ACR. She began her career with the ARHP in August 1984. During her years at the ARHP, she has worked in membership and educational programs, coordinating the development of more than 26 ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting programs.

2011 Fellows-in-Training Scholarship

The Fellows-in-Training (FIT) Scholarship is designed to expose fellows-in-training to the ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting. This program supplements the advanced training rheumatology fellows receive at their training programs and includes an educational symposium specifically designed for the fellows and an evening reception on Friday, November 4, 2011. Registration for the FIT Annual Meeting Scholarship will open on Friday, July 15 and close at 5:00 pm Eastern time on Monday, August 8.

Student Benefits from Resident Research Preceptorship

Although the ACR Research and Education Foundation offers a number of opportunities to students interested in rheumatology, the Ephraim P. Engleman Endowed Resident Research Preceptorship is a unique opportunity that allows for a much more in-depth learning experience. The purpose of the Engleman Preceptorship is to introduce residents to the specialty of rheumatology by supporting a full-time research experience, with the goal of attracting promising physician–scientists to the field of rheumatology early in their careers.
