The Race Between Senators McCain and Obama

From the College  |  Issue: September 2008  |  September 1, 2008

Biologics: Sens. McCain and Obama have similar views on biologics. Both candidates, like the ACR, are in favor of developing safe yet efficient policies for follow-on biologics, and neither candidate is opposed to the re-importation of drugs.

Information technology: Information technology is an important aspect of the health care community—encompassing everything from e-prescribing to electronic health records—and will continue to have a great impact on the way medicine is practiced. Both candidates believe that health information technology is necessary and should continue to be expanded. Specifically, Sen. Obama states on his Web site that he “will invest $10 billion a year over the next five years to move the U.S. health care system to broad adoption of standards-based electronic health information systems.” Sen. McCain has not yet developed a course of action, but—like his opponent—considers it a high priority.
