The Rheumatologist Honored with 2 Awards of Excellence

Keri Losavio  |  July 26, 2023

We are honored to announce that The Rheumatologist has received two Awards of Excellence from APEX 2023 for content published in calendar year 2022: an Award of Excellence in the category of Public Health Concerns—Health & Medical for the editorial supplement to the April issue, COVID-19: What We Know, and an Award of Excellence for the entire November issue.

“It’s hard to believe that I have been writing about COVID-19 since March 2020,” said then Physician Editor Philip Seo, MD, MHS, in his introduction to the supplement. “By my count, over the past three years, The Rheumatologist has published more than 400 articles on COVID-19, detailing how the pandemic has impacted our patients and our lives.”

The supplement drew content from our online repository of COVID-19 coverage and included a summary of the ACR’s clinical guidance on COVID-19 and vaccines for patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, therapeutics for COVID-19, the state of the research, vaccination hesitancy and more.

The November issue led off with a Rheumination from Bharat Kumar, MD, MME, FACP, RhMSUS, exploring the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in rheumatology, a topic that is only becoming more relevant as insurance companies try to implement practices that would take clinical decision making out of the hands of rheumatologists and let AI determine appropriate care. Opinion pieces in the issue addressed the opioid crisis and how racial bias (even if unconscious) affects the physician-patient relationship. The issue also contained articles on psoriatic arthritis, lupus nephritis, difficult-to-treat rheumatoid arthritis, a medical mission to Ukraine and much more.
