Thick Skin & Solid Research: Necessary Ingredients for Publishing Success

Vanessa Caceres  |  June 1, 2023

Scientific publishing requires a commitment to clear writing, concise narratives and a willingness to accept feedback. Daniel Solomon, MD, editor-in-chief of Arthritis & Rheumatology, provides insights into his experiences.

RA Disease Activity & Alcohol Consumption Habits

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  May 30, 2023

Past studies have suggested that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who consume a moderate amount of alcohol may experience lower disease activity and higher quality of life than non-drinkers. In this study, Alfredsson, et al. confirmed earlier studies’ claims that alcohol consumption reduces disease activity in a dose-dependent manner, and also indicated that patients who stopped drinking post-baseline experienced worsened disease activity, more pain and a lower quality of life.

Platelets in the Pathogenesis of SLE

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  April 24, 2023

In a study, El Bannoudi et al. found that platelets contribute to the pathogenesis of SLE by secreting the proinflammatory platelet-associated lectin, galactoside-binding, soluble 3 binding protein (LGALS3BP), which also represents a novel biomarker of SLE clinical activity.

Anti-P. copri Antibody Responses in Patients with RA

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  March 30, 2023

Background & Objectives Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease associated with immune responses to the patient’s own antigens and characterized by inflammation and substantial joint destruction. Prevotella copri, a gut commensal bacterium, has been reported to be an immune-relevant organism in individuals with RA. This study sought to evaluate antibody responses to anti-P….

2022 ACR Guideline for Vaccinations in Patients with RMDs

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  February 27, 2023

This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on the use of vaccinations in children and adults with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. It includes expanded indications for some vaccines, as well as guidance on whether to hold immunosuppressive medications or delay vaccination to maximize vaccine immunogenicity and efficacy.

How Long Should Methotrexate Be Held Following Seasonal Vaccinations?

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  February 1, 2023

Vaccinations against preventable diseases, including seasonal influenza, are strongly recommended for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who are at increased risk of infections as a result of underlying immune dysfunction and treatment-induced immunosuppression. Park et al. conducted this clinical trial to investigate whether discontinuing methotrexate for one week after seasonal influenza vaccination is noninferior to discontinuing it for two weeks after vaccination in patients with RA.

Gout & Excess Risk of Severe SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  January 3, 2023

In this large, population-based study, Xie et al. found that the risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection, 30-day hospitalization and 30-day death were higher among individuals with gout than individuals without gout in the general population, irrespective of COVID-19 vaccination status.

Considering Benzbromarone as First-Line Therapy for Gout

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  December 1, 2022

In this comparative effectiveness clinical trial, Yan et al. set out to compare nontitrated, low-dose benzbromarone (not approved in the U.S.), a renal urate transporter 1 inhibitor, with low-dose febuxostat as the first-line therapy in gout patients with renal uric acid underexcretion.

Self-Initiated Care May Reduce Workforce Gap

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  November 7, 2022

Seppen et al. developed a smartphone application for patients with RA to assess the safety and efficacy of patient-initiated care, compared with usual care. By answering a weekly Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3 (RAPID3) questionnaire, patients were able to monitor their own disease activity between clinic visits.

Patterns of Arthritis Flare

Arthritis & Rheumatology  |  September 28, 2022

Similar patterns of inflammation occur in the joints of patients with inflammatory arthritis, but in each individual, arthritis affects only a subset of possible anatomic areas. Chang et al. set out to identify patient-specific anatomic patterns of joint flare to distinguish local from systemic drivers of chronic disease.
