Many Doctors & Specialists Don’t Adhere to Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria

January 1, 2018 • By Lorraine L. Janeczko

NEW YORK (Reuters Health)—Generalist doctors, and even many specialists, have relatively poor knowledge of the American College of Rheumatology 1990 and 2010 fibromyalgia diagnostic criteria, according to results of a survey conducted in Canada. “Physicians do not have adequate and homogeneous knowledge of the fibromyalgia diagnostic criteria. Approximately half of physicians did not adhere to… [Read More]

Treat-to-Target Strategy Evaluated for Fibromyalgia Care

September 19, 2017 • By Susan Bernstein

Treat-to-target is a widely used approach for rheumatoid arthritis, in which rheumatologists prescribe treatments to reach established benchmarks of disease activity.1 Is it time for a similar approach for fibromyalgia treatment, even though its pathogenesis, disease-activity measures and treatment algorithms are less well understood? Three fibromyalgia researchers present their case in a new paper, “Treat-to-Target… [Read More]

Straightforward Approach Can Help Rheumatology Health Professionals Engage with Fibromyalgia Patients

April 19, 2017 • By Terence Starz, MD, on behalf of the ARHP Practice Committee

“I have pain all over my body” is a challenging response after you’ve asked a new patient what brings them in for their visit. You immediately suspect that this patient has fibromyalgia. The prevalence of fibromyalgia in the U.S. is 5 million people, and it is among the most common conditions in many rheumatology practices…. [Read More]

Brain Stimulation May Help with Fibromyalgia

April 3, 2017 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

New research examined the use of transcranial direct current stimulation over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brain to modulate attention in patients with fibromyalgia. The study found that the active current increased heat pain threshold and tolerance. However, a regression analysis showed the effect on executive attention appeared to be independent of the effect on pain…... [Read More]

fMRI Can Help Diagnose Fibromyalgia

March 20, 2017 • By David C. Holzman

Mark Harmel / Science Source

Brain imaging can distinguish fibromyalgia patients from healthy controls with high sensitivity and specificity, according to two papers published nearly simultaneously in Pain late last summer, by groups at the Universities of Colorado and Michigan, respectively. Somewhat surprisingly to the authors and others, in the Colorado study, which used both painful and nonpainful stimuli, the… [Read More]

Is Fibromyalgia Overdiagnosed?

October 10, 2016 • By Susan Bernstein

Are too many patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia? The co-authors of one new study believe that close to 75% of patients who have received a clinical fibromyalgia diagnosis do not meet the 2010 Preliminary American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Criteria for Fibromyalgia.1 They say these patients are false-positive and may be taking treatments they don’t need…. Fibromyalgia & Bipolar Spectrum Disorder: A Shared Pathophysiology May Lead to Better Drug Targets

March 21, 2016 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

Patients suffering from fibromyalgia and those suffering from bipolar spectrum disorder experience similar symptoms. Research suggests that these diseases may share a pathophysiological process, particularly a similar impairment in the prefrontal-limbic networks of the brain. A new editorial addresses how a better understanding of the potential shared biological underpinning of these diseases could result in unique drug targets…... [Read More]
