A Rose by Any Other Name: Why clinicians & patients prefer the term myalgic encephalomyelitis & other updates on chronic fatigue syndrome

September 26, 2017 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

A session at the FOCIS 2017 meeting examined the current challenges and understanding of chronic fatigue syndrome, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, in the hope of stimulating new approaches to deciphering the disease’s mechanistic and immunological underpinnings…... [Read More]

Molecular Profile Hints at Inflammatory Processes in Chronic Fatigue

August 2, 2017 • By Lisa Rapaport

(Reuters Health)—People with severe symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome have a molecular signature in blood made up of 17 immune system signaling molecules that are elevated, which may provide insight into how inflammation contributes to the condition. “Of the 17 cytokines that correlated with severity, 13 are proinflammatory, likely contributing to many of the symptoms… [Read More]

Rituximab for Fatigue & Oral Dryness in Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome

June 28, 2017 • By Arthritis & Rheumatology

These researchers investigated whether rituximab, an anti-B cell therapy, improves symptoms of fatigue and oral dryness in patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (SS). The multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial included a health economic analysis. There were no significant improvements in any outcome measure with rituximab except for unstimulated salivary flow. The study concludes that rituximab is neither clinically effective nor cost effective in this patient population…... [Read More]

Step by Step: Pedometers Increase Exercise & Help RA Patients with Fatigue

June 9, 2017 • By Richard Quinn

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis need a way to manage their fatigue outside of the standard treatment regime, says Patti Katz, PhD. “We found that increasing physical activity [by using a pedometer] did indeed make a difference in peoples’ fatigue level. … And it doesn’t make them hurt more.”…... Weakness, Fatigue Can Signal Underlying Rheumatologic Disease

April 17, 2017 • By Simon M. Helfgott, MD

As clinicians, we are familiar with pain, stiffness and soreness—subjective nouns that define our métier. These helpful words serve as signposts that direct us along the path to the proper diagnosis. Consider the young man with a stiff, sore back (a case of ankylosing spondylitis?) or the postpartum woman experiencing newly painful, stiff and sore… [Read More]

Surgeon Performance Unaffected by Fatigue from Overnight Work

August 27, 2015 • By Gene Emery

(Reuters Health)—Going without sleep the night before does not affect the performance of doctors doing elective surgery the next morning, according to a new Ontario study that runs contrary to research demonstrating that sleep-deprived physicians pose a hazard to patients. The odds of having a surgery-related problem were 22.2% when the doctor had been treating… [Read More]

EULAR 2015: Biology of Fatigue Rooted in Genes, Cytokines, Free Radicals

August 17, 2015 • By Thomas R. Collins

ROME, Italy—Fatigue, a problem experienced frequently by patients with rheumatic diseases, is best thought of as a survival mechanism and as a single phenomenon, not a condition that comes in a variety of forms, an expert said in a session at EULAR 2015, the annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR).
