Non-Pharmacological Interventions & Management of RA-Related Fatigue

January 13, 2020 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

Often, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients struggle with fatigue, and the cause of the fatigue remains unclear. Past research suggests RA-related fatigue may be moderately improved by physical activity. A recent narrative review supports these prior findings, noting that patients also benefit moderately from psychosocial interventions…... [Read More]

Scientists May Be Closer to A Blood Test for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

April 30, 2019 • By Kate Kelland

LONDON (Reuters)—Scientists in the U.S. say they have taken a step toward developing a possible diagnostic test for chronic fatigue syndrome, a condition characterized by exhaustion and other debilitating symptoms. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine say a pilot study of 40 people, half of whom were healthy and half of whom had the… [Read More]

Study Finds Chronic Fatigue Clues in Overactive Immune Response

December 17, 2018 • By Kate Kelland

LONDON (Reuters)—Scientists exploring what may trigger chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) have found clues in the way some people’s immune systems respond to interferon alpha.1 The researchers used the drug to create a model of the disease in people without CFS but with hepatitis C. Many patients who receive interferon alpha experience extreme fatigue during treatment,… [Read More]

Does the Metal-Fatigue Principle Apply to Elderly Bones?

August 16, 2018 • By Mary Beth Nierengarten

Can principles from engineering provide a broader understanding of how the human skeleton works and be used to help prevent a common and often consequential event for people as they age—bone fractures? Research from a team of investigators that includes orthopedic surgeons and mechanical engineers suggests that, yes, looking at how engineered materials, such as… [Read More]

Study Finds Pedometers Reduce Fatigue in RA Patients

April 26, 2018 • By Mary Beth Nierengarten

For people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), fatigue can be a debilitating symptom that interferes with daily life and significantly reduces quality of life. Managing fatigue can be difficult; it is linked to disease activity and a host of other conditions that commonly accompany RA, such as depression, sleep problems and obesity. A new study, however,… [Read More]

Physical Assessment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: It Just May Work

January 15, 2018 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

A recent U.K. study assessed the use of the Perrin technique to diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome based on five physical signs of disease. Overall, researchers found the accuracy of diagnosis by allied health professionals was highest when using tests for only two signs: tender coelic plexus and postural/mechanical disturbances of the thoracic spine…... Pedometers & RA: Does Increasing Physical Activity Decrease Fatigue?

January 2, 2018 • By Arthritis Care & Research

Recent research examined the effectiveness of a pedometer-based intervention for managing fatigue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). During the 21-week trial, RA patients using pedometers successfully increased their physical activity, with a greater than 30% decrease in the proportion of participants classified as sedentary. Patients also decreased their reported fatigue, and some reported improvements in function, pain, depressive symptoms and disease activity levels…... [Read More]

A Defect in Mitochondrial Function May Underlie Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

January 1, 2018 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) may be unable to meet certain energetic demands, according to a U.K. study. Researchers found that PBMCs in healthy individuals may adapt to environmental stressors by enhancing their ability to increase ATP production through mitochondrial respiration, but not in patients with CFS…... Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Are There Different Phenotypes?

December 18, 2017 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

New research has examined the autonomic parameters of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) using the DePaul Symptom Questionnaire to place patients on a disease spectrum. Researchers found different groups of CFS patients had different levels of autonomic dysfunction and cognitive impairment, suggesting that different CFS criteria may diagnose a spectrum of disease severities and different CFS phenotypes…... Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Why Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Is the Preferred Term and More

October 17, 2017 • By Lara C. Pullen, PhD

CHICAGO—Joseph Breen, PhD, program officer at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., opened the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) session at the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS) 2017 meeting by asking presenters to describe the current state of the science to the key immunology stakeholders gathered in the room. The hope was that… [Read More]
